2011 Altadonna Pinot Grigio

The area referred to as the “Tre Venezie” encompasses a vast territory in northern Italy, including part of the Trentino region, as well as the entirety of the Veneto and the Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions. Protected to the north by the Alps, the area is well-ventilated by the warm, gentle breezes off the Adriatic Sea. Pinot Grigio thrives in this unique terrain. Italian white-wine making was revolutionized in this region through cold fermentation, the selection of yeasts, and densely planted vineyards.

From the Wine Maker – “Abundant aromas of white peaches and ripe grapefruit make up the bouquet. This is a vibrant wine with a crisp, refreshing acidity and mineral notes that balance the ample body and texture.”

This Pinot Grigio makes an excellent aperitif wine. It pairs well with vegetable hors d’oeuvres and other lighter fare, including salads.

2011 BackHouse Pinot Grigio

back-house-pinot-grigioIn 1994, Roy and Rachael Cecchetti purchased a two and a half-acre parcel in the Sonoma Valley, one mile east of the Plaza. On that parcel, situated next to the grand willow tree and the natural spring fed pond, was an old backhouse. Through some research of the property, it was discovered that the old backhouse was once home to vintners, writers, artists and those who craved the solitude and enjoyment of nature. Backhouse wines were created to bring these memories back to life for a new generation.

From the Wine Maker – “pale straw in color with complex flavors of fruits and herbs. Round and full, this wine can be enjoyed with a variety of foods such as salads and poultry dishes.”

2011 Barone Fini Pinot Grigio

From the winemaker – “The Pinot Grigio vineyards of BARONE FINI are 25 to 30 years old. Grape picking is manual; all blemished clusters are discarded. Selected grapes are taken to the excellent, state-of-the-art cooperative winery, where they are put through soft, cold crushing. Juice is then divided into several units, each undergoing a different temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The result, in effect, is several distinct wines in progress. After reaching equilibrium, juice sections are skillfully blended by our winemakers into the final BARONE FINI Pinot Grigio.

Soft, round fruit fills the mouth with ripe, juicy flavors. A long finish glides into flavors of ripe apples and lichee nuts.”

Enjoy alone, as an apéritif, or with shellfish, fowl and light meals that include vegetarian dishes.

2009 Familia Dante Pinot Grigio

Andre’ — “Okay, truth be told I have been heard saying many times over ” I am not a fan of Pinot Grigio” . Maybe it was that first encounter with a certain wine you all may know “SM”. Not a bad wine, but for the money there is just so much more interesting juice out there.

Enter the Familia Dante Pinot Grigio 2009 vintage. As a disclaimer I tasted this wine for the first time after a long day at work so maybe that’s why I enjoyed it so much. I walked into the kitchen, dropped my brief case, kicked off my shoes and poured a glass. I could feel the tension of the day melt away. And then I realized that Tracey had made pirogi for dinner. Am I lucky or what? This didn’t occur to me to be a food and wine pairing moment at the time. But, the bright, crisp, citrus flavors cut through the richness of the potato dumplings cooked in butter with onions. After I wiped the grease from my chin I really started to pay attention to the wine. (Tracey was asleep). Well balanced, which is a benchmark to me, pleasant citrus flavors, with pink grape fruit being dominant, truly delicious. My mind started to drift to warmer weather as I imagined myself drinking this on a sunny  day with a little plate of crudo, the sashimi of Italy.

So here is your food and wine homework. A bottle or two of Familia Dante Pinot Grigio. Some pristine raw fish, fluke or Hamachi would be my first choice, with a pinch of salt and some pink grapefruit segments. Follow that with some Mrs T’s pirogi with sautéed onions and you tell me. you can email me at andres@ptd or look me up on Facebook at Andre’s Restaurant and Wine Boutique and tell me what you think.

Remember, if you like it, it’s good.

From the winemaker:

“A classic grape varietal producing a grapey wine with crisp acidity and racey balanced fruit.”
