2014 Ghost Pines Zinfandel

Ghost Pines knows no boundaries. Without the restriction of traditional winegrowing boundaries, the grapes for Ghost Pines wines are chosen from California’s best regions solely for their quality and flavor. This philosophy delivers wines of consistent quality and a distinct combination of richness, smoothness and balance that could never be mistaken for ordinary. Named for the indigenous Gray Pines dotting Northern California’s hillsides, Ghost Pines embodies the progressive spirit of California winemaking and inspires a sense of individuality.

From the Wine Maker – “Our Ghost Pines Zinfandel blends fruit from San Joaquin and Sonoma counties to accentuate the best of what each of these phenomenal Zinfandel-producing counties has to offer. The 2014 Zinfandel opens with rich, complex aromas of ripe raspberry jam, cracked pepper and toasty oak. On the palate, the wine offers intense, jammy flavors of black cherry, boysenberry, brown spice and cola framed by lush structure and a long, multi-layered finish.”

Try with roast, steak, hamburgers, beef ribs, brisket, Beef Wellington or beef jerky. Hard cheese like Parmigiano or Romano.

2013 Bogle Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel

2011 St. Francis “Old Vines” Zinfandel

Zinfandel is sometimes referred to as California’s own grape variety. Prized by Italian immigrants arriving in California in the early 1900’s, it was a popular choice for making their families traditional rich hardy style dry red wine.

From the Wine Maker – “The grapes for our 2011 Old Vines Zinfandel program must meet certain criteria to be included in this classic California wine. The vines must be at least 50 years old; many are as old as hundred years old. Because of their age, these plots yield less than two tons per acre of exceptionally concentrated fruit. Many of these vineyards have Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet planted among the Zinfandel adding texture and color to what is called a “field blend”. The 2011 Old Vines Zinfandel has deep aromas and flavors of ripe black cherries are laced with spice and toasted oak notes in this full-bodied wine of velvet tannins and a long finish.”

2013 Zin 91 Old Vine Zinfandel

This great Zin is dry and spicy, with blackberry, currant, herb and coffee flavors that finish with a hint of raisins.

From the Wine Maker – “The aromas are classic of an old vine Zinfandel: spicy and jammy. Notes of black pepper, raspberry, and boysenberry lead to hints of cinnamon, sandalwood, and clove to create the bouquet. On the palate, the wine carries over the spicy notes, as well as black cherry and cassis flavors. The oak-aging gives it a supple and velvety texture. Fruit-forward with balanced acidity and alcohol.”

Pairs well with an array of dishes, from vegetable lasagna to hearty beef stews. Also excellent with roasted and grilled meats.

2009 Project Paso Old Vine Zinfandel

Project-Paso-Old-Vine-ZinfandelFor over 30 years, three generations of Sebastianis have partnered with Sam Balakian, a local Paso Robles grape grower, to craft high-quality varietal wines for California appellation blends.  Project Paso is their effort to share Paso Robles’ rustic character. What started out as a small partnership has now come to fruition with these wines. To pay homage to all the work their families have done over the past three decades, they felt it only proper to keep the name “Project Paso.”

From the Wine Maker – “There is a vast complexity of flavors and aromas in this wine, driven by the unique Paso Robles soils and the blend of three Zinfandel vineyards. The nose opens up with dried fruit and concentrated blueberry aromas, with white pepper, warm Indian spices, and a touch of gaminess rounding out the background. This wine is similarly complex on the palate, with chocolate-covered cherry flavors balanced by old vine spice and a hint of sweet cigar. Earthy, medium-bodied, with a touch of minerality, this varietally correct Zinfandel gets its depth from Paso’s red soils. Light, dusty tannins frame the finish, with hints of espresso bean and sour cherry.”

This Zinfandel comes from three different vineyards in Paso Robles, and is blended with a single-vineyard Petite Sirah for added color and texture. Picked ripe after a very cool growing season, the resulting balance and lower alcohol make for a great food pairing with chicken mole enchiladas, Mexican spice rubbed pork shoulder, or almost anything off of the barbecue, served with homemade baked beans.

2010 Cakebread Cellars Zinfandel

Cakebread-Cellars-ZinfandelOur Lake County Zinfandel  comes from a heavenly vineyard planted at a 2,100-foot-plus elevation in the acclaimed  Red Hills appellation of Lake County.  Located  at the foot of Mt. Konocti, an ancient volcano, the site boasts a perfect  southwestern exposure, excellent air circulation, and well-drained, mineral-rich,  red volcanic soils.  Its hot sunny days,  windy afternoons and nights chilled by breezes from nearby Clear Lake ensure  full and even ripening of our three distinguished clones of Zinfandel: Primitivo  and heritage selections from Amador and Mendocino counties.  In 2010, we included 6% Petite Sirah – from a  block of the same vineyard – in the blend.   Petite Sirah is often blended with Zinfandel, as it contributes deep  color, excellent tannin structure and added complexity.

From the Wine Maker – “Our  2010 Zinfandel showcases bright raspberry, black cherry and dark plum aromas  complemented by intriguing dusty earth, black pepper and milk chocolate scents.  On the rich and lively palate, it delivers  pure, deeply concentrated black raspberry, dark cherry and blackberry flavors streaked  with mineral and briary spice tones.  Beautifully  structured with sturdy, but supple tannins, fresh acidity and a long, rich,  chocolate-y finish, this mountain Zinfandel wine is delightful to drink now,  but will surely repay another 3-5 years of cellaring.”

This wine could be enjoyed when eating grilled meats or chicken. Also try with spicy dishes, and medium cheeses.

2008 Pedroncelli Zinfandel Mother Clone

This Zinfandel is made up of 90% Zinfandel; 10% Petite Sirah. Once fermented, the wine is aged in American oak barrels for 12 months. The touch of Petite Sirah adds the additional color, structure, and tannin to this Zinfandel.

From the Wine Maker – “Our Mother Clone Zinfandel is full-bodied and intense with classic Dry Creek Valley, aromas of ripe raspberry and warm spice with jammy fruit flavors framed by subtle black pepper. This is a concentrated wine that offers a great balance of fruit, spice and tannin combined with a long, lingering finish. Enjoy now or cellar for three to five years.”

Rosenblum Cellars Vintners Cuvée XXXIII Zinfandel

Similar to many European wines, the Rosenblum Zinfandel Cuvée XXXII doesn’t carry a specific vintage, allowing the winemaker to create a blend that reflects his ideal wine style. The result is a well-balanced, multilayered wine that can be enjoyed immediately upon release.

From the Wine Maker – “With rich fruit intensity, our Zinfandel Cuvee XXXIII opens with a mélange of raspberry, plum, and Bing cherry aromas. Sweet mocha and vanilla spices gather around red stone fruits on the medium-bodied palate. The well-balanced acidity and fine tannins showcase the vibrancy of flavors in this accessible wine.”

A wine suited for all occasions, it pairs well with barbecued meats, pizza or pastas.

2009 Folie à Deux Ménage à Trois Red Wine

The menage a trois is the coupling of three grapes, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The actual blend is 46% Zinfandel, 31% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Sauvignon.

A deep dark, clear raspberry jello red. The nose does not give up much, a bit of strawberry, a touch of chocolate and not much else. Nicely fruit forward, soft round black and blueberry flavors, cocoa powder, raspberry and then you can sense the tannins in the mid-palate. The tannins are light, but give the Menage a Trois enough structure and body to hold the fruit together. There is a nice raspberry jam finish.

A good starter red wine for people who don’t know if they like red wine. Nice flavor, soft and approachable, but there is enough going on to please experienced red wine drinkers.

This wine could be enjoyed when eating grilled meats or chicken.

Menage a Trois was named 2009 ‘Wine Brand of the Year’ by Market Watch.
