2011 Sandstone Merlot

Since 1883, five generations of our family have handcrafted fine wines that express the very best of our vineyards and winemaking expertise. Our Estate Grown Sandstone Merlot come from a gently sloping formation of hills running along the southeastern corner of the historic Livermore Valley. With warm days, cool nights, well-drained sandstone soils, and incoming breezes from the San Francisco Bay, the Wente family’s hillside vineyard is an ideal place to grow outstanding Merlot.

From the winemaker – “Our Sandstone Merlot is a great display of grapes coming from many hillside and valley floor vineyards, each of which give distinct aromatics and structure to the wine. The estate grown vineyards that make up this wine are fermented and aged separately in barrel for about a year before they are blended together. We add Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot to the blend which then ages for another 6 months. Although lighter in structure than a Cabernet Sauvignon, this Merlot combines solid, yet silky tannins with diverse fruit flavors to make a lasting impression.”

This vintage pairs nicely with rack or leg of lamb, lamb chops, roast pork, pork chops or tenderloin, veal with heartier vegetable and/or bean sauces or mushroom and/or wine sauces. Cheeses like Parmigiano, Romano and other hard cheeses as well as cheddar and other savory, firm cheeses.

2014 Sterling Vintner’s Collection Merlot

From the winemaker – “Combining the profiles of various sites, we created a comprehensive representation of this world-famous growing region. A majority of the fruit comes from the deeper soils of the valley floor, which translate to a broad mouth-feel and fleshy, juicy flavors.”

Great with rack or leg of lamb, lamb chops, roast pork, pork chops or tenderloin, veal with heartier vegetable and/or bean sauces or mushroom and/or wine sauces or Parmigiano, Romano and other hard cheeses as well as cheddar and other savory, firm cheeses.

2014 Estancia Merlot

estancia-merlotEstancia relies on the benefits of boutique-style winemaking techniques, including whole-cluster fermentation, gentle punch downs, and basket pressing. Our Monterey-based winery uses gentle gravity flow systems to minimize aggressive tannins and bitterness. It is this hands-on crafting of the wines—from grapes to bottle—that results in our consistent and superior wine quality.

From the winemaker – “We’re convinced that the world’s best wines showcase the true essence of their origins. The Central Coast encompasses Monterey County—where our winery is located—plus a myriad of unique California vineyards. Merlot fruit from cooler Monterey lends exquisite texture and suppleness to this wine, while fruit from other winegrowing areas—notable for warm days and significantly cooler nights— contribute concentrated fruit aromas and flavors. The flavor shows soft fleshy fruit, cherry cola, with pleasantly lingering toasty vanilla.”

2013 Chateau Souverain Merlot

chateau-souverain-merlotThe story of Chateau Souverain begins in 1944 when J. Leland “Lee” Stewart harvested his first crop of grapes from Howell Mountain vineyard in Napa Valley. In the years that followed, Stewart used innovation, meticulous standards and his natural gift for winemaking to establish Souverain as one of the great California wineries.

From the winemaker – “Chateau Souverain Merlot opens with dark red fruit aromas reminiscent of black cherry, plum, and fresh blueberries complemented by hints of brown spice and baking chocolate. This Merlot finishes with soft acidity and a fruit-driven balance that gives the wine a polished sense of elegance.”

2009 Avalon Merlot

Packed with deep, dark berry fruit and nuanced hints of cocoa, herb and earth with a soft structure, this Merlot is made from 88% Merlot, 6% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Petite Verdot.

From the winemaker – “Our 2009 Merlot shows its depth with a rich garnet color. Aromas of juicy boysenberries and cherry pie fill the glass. Crème brulee and brown sugar notes from oak aging compliment the ripe berry aromas. Mountain fruit characteristics show in the intensity of the fruit flavors. The entry enjoys sweet notes of raspberry and cherry with a finish of jammy boysenberry preserves. The oak notes of chocolate and wood smoke pair with and compliment the rich fruit layers. Refined tannins support this balanced wine that doesn’t show the typical alcohol component found in many Merlots. As the wine develops in the glass, one may enjoy ongoing berry notes, a touch of allspice evolving in the middle, while the wine continues to lengthen on the finish. Smooth, silky and profound berry flavors confirm this wine’s birthplace as Napa Valley.”

2012 Noble Vines 181 Merlot

Noble-Vines-181-MerlotThe 181 Merlot clone traces its origins to Pomerol in Bordeaux, where it is highly valued due to its suitability to the red clay soils of the region. Clay soil retains water well and stays cool longer in spring, thus delaying bud break, an ideal outcome for Merlot. The red soils of our Clay Station Vineyard in Lodi are similar to the red soils in Pomerol – the perfect environment for 181 Merlot to thrive and produce wines with concentrated flavors and supple tannins.

From the winemaker – “181 is classic Bordeaux-style Merlot, elegantly opening with aromas of cherry, blackberry and sweet herbs. Fresh fruit flavors of black cherry and ripe plum fuse seamlessly with hints of spice leading to a lingering and luxurious finish.

With balanced tannins and acidity, this medium-bodied wine is a perfect companion to oven-roasted turkey, Italian sausage, braised short ribs and mild to medium hard cheeses like Port Salut, Edam and Gouda.
