2016 B Side Cabernet Sauvignon

Side-B-Cabernet-SauvignonB Side wines tell the story of the flip-side of Napa Valley. Nestled in rural areas and rolling hills along the eastern edge of the valley, these vineyards are just a few miles from the glamorous, high-priced wineries featured along Highway 29. The eastern side of Napa Valley includes areas such as Pope Valley, Chiles Valley, Wooden Valley, Stags Leap District and lower Calistoga. Vines in these areas are grown in thin volcanic soils, which yield smaller, more concentrated fruit.

From the winemaker – “The B Side Cabernet Sauvignon is a deeply concentrated, inky color in the glass. Vibrant aromas of blackberry compote, mocha, vanilla, sweet leather and lavender are pronounced on the nose. The fleshy, fruit-forward palate is packed with flavor including juicy fruit, cassis, melted chocolate and hints of Blackstrap molasses. The deep, dark fruit note is a solid line throughout and comes from the beginning all the way to the end of the wine. The tasty French oak frames the wine with ripe, round tannins underpinning the overall structure. The wine is aged for 14 months with 40% of the blend in new French oak barrels (Francois Frere & Radoux) while the remaining balance is in seasoned French oak. This wine is deep and brooding with layers of aromas and flavors, well-structured with smooth tannins and a noticeably, lengthy finish.”

Enjoy on its own or pair with slow-roasted beef brisket, blackened swordfish atop herbed couscous, or a wild mushroom tart with chevre topping.

2010 Conn Creek Cabernet Sauvignon

Conn-Creek-Cabernet-SauvignonFour vineyards contribute 71% of the fruit for this wine. Collins Holystone Vineyard in St. Helena, owned by Conn Creek Winery founders Bill and Kathleen Collins, is the largest component at 37%. The vineyard’s site enjoys a warm climate and good drainage leading to consistent early season maturity. Surber Vineyard from Calistoga added 13% and Tall Trees from Yountville another 12% of the blend. The well-known Stagecoach Vineyard in the Atlas Peak appellation in the Vaca Mountains contributed 9%. The remaining 29% comes from the Oakville, Chiles Valley, Oak Knoll, Rutherford, and Mt. Veeder appellations. The combination of the various vineyard sites and their expressions of terroir all make contributions to this complete and complex Cabernet Sauvignon.

From the winemaker – “Opening aromas of blackberries, plums and dark chocolate carry through to the palate. Accents of spring wildflowers, spiced honey, and pie crust highlight complexity. Ripe focused tannins follow the flavors to a lingering cocoa powder finish.”

This wine goes well with dishes like espresso crusted steak or roasted rack of lamb.

2011 Alias California Red Blend

Alias-California-Red-Blend

This great blend is made from 40% Merlot, 27% Zinfandel, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Syrah.

From the winemaker – “In 2011, the California harvest experienced an extremely low yield. The result was a significantly smaller amount of merlot and cabernet sauvignon grapes than we needed. With prices for grapes and wine at a record high and no supply to add to our harvest, we started experimenting with blending them together. The result was amazing. We added some zinfandel and syrah to the blend, and the wine came alive. With great red fruit and a hint of cocoa in the nose, the wine dances on the palate with flavors of strawberry, cherry, plum, sweet raspberry, with a touch of vanilla and toast. In this case, the whole truly added up to more than the sum of the parts. We think you’ll really enjoy this delicious new wine.”

Enjoy with baked, barbecued, broiled or roasted chicken, Chicken Cacciatore, chicken in mushroom or red wine sauce, chicken marinated in herbs and grilled, Coq au vin.

2012 Souverain Cabernet Sauvignon

Souverain-Cabernet-SauvignonFrom the Wine Maker – “This classic Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon offers rich, dark fruit aromas that lead to flavors of black cherry, black plum, anise and chocolate. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon creates a wonderful density and concentration to this wine along with well-structured tannins. On the palate, hints of brown baking spice meld with the dark fruit and polished tannins. The finish is long with hints of sweet fruit.”

2012 Gascon Malbec

Don Miguel Gascón Malbec hails from Mendoza, a mountainous province at the foot of the Andes Mountains, along the western edge of Argentina. Regarded as the most important wine-producing province in Argentina, Mendoza accounts for more than 80% of Argentine winemaking.

By selecting grapes from vineyards at varying elevations throughout Mendoza’s high valleys, winemakers achieve superb balance in the finished wine. The high altitude places the vineyards under intense sunlight, which translates into fruit with extraordinary flavor and aromatic expressions.

From the winemaker – “Our 2012 Malbec opens with intense aromas of blackberry, plum and a hint of mocha. Dark fruit flavors intertwine with notes of spice, licorice and chocolate to create a magnificent, full-bodied Malbec. Round tannins and a plush mouthfeel lead the way to a long, velvety finish.”

Gascón Malbec pairs well with grilled red meats, wild game, pasta dishes and chocolate molten dessert.

2009 Chateau De La Huste Bordeaux

This blend of 90% Merlot – 10% Cabernet Franc was produced in France at the Chateau De La Huste family estate, owned by the Rulliers since 1860. The Chateau de la Huste’s vines are on one of the highest parts of Saillans. In old french, La Huste means the bump.

The grapes are picked by hand when they are fully ripe and put in baskets. Sorted minutely before and after full destemming. Fermentation in concrete tanks with built-in thermoregulation which guarantees better control of the fermentation process. Long vatting period (3 weeks) for a slow and gentle extraction of the phenolic agents. Malolactic fermentation in barrels. 12 to 15 months in new barrels (having matured 1 or 2 barches of wine). 20% of the barrels are replaced every year and toasting levels are selected for optimum enhancement of our wines’s fruit flavors.

Wine Spectator Review March 2012 Issue – “Subtle tobacco and roasted mesquite notes lead the way, followed by mulled plum and fig fruit and a fleshy but stylish finish that lets the fruit stretch out nicely.”

Great with rack or leg of lamb, lamb chops, roast pork, pork chops or tenderloin, or Parmigiano, Romano and other hard cheeses as well as cheddar and other savory, firm cheeses.
