2011 Sandstone Merlot

Since 1883, five generations of our family have handcrafted fine wines that express the very best of our vineyards and winemaking expertise. Our Estate Grown Sandstone Merlot come from a gently sloping formation of hills running along the southeastern corner of the historic Livermore Valley. With warm days, cool nights, well-drained sandstone soils, and incoming breezes from the San Francisco Bay, the Wente family’s hillside vineyard is an ideal place to grow outstanding Merlot.

From the winemaker – “Our Sandstone Merlot is a great display of grapes coming from many hillside and valley floor vineyards, each of which give distinct aromatics and structure to the wine. The estate grown vineyards that make up this wine are fermented and aged separately in barrel for about a year before they are blended together. We add Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot to the blend which then ages for another 6 months. Although lighter in structure than a Cabernet Sauvignon, this Merlot combines solid, yet silky tannins with diverse fruit flavors to make a lasting impression.”

This vintage pairs nicely with rack or leg of lamb, lamb chops, roast pork, pork chops or tenderloin, veal with heartier vegetable and/or bean sauces or mushroom and/or wine sauces. Cheeses like Parmigiano, Romano and other hard cheeses as well as cheddar and other savory, firm cheeses.

2011 Bridlewood Estate Blend 175

Bridlewood-Estate-Blend-175At Bridlewood, we like to take our time. We hand select our grapes from California’s vast Central Coast AVA, and we pour our passion into winemaking. Our tasting room sits on a picturesque 105-acre estate which rests on a high bench of ancient seabed, facing the Pacific breezes that meander through the Santa Ynez Mountains to the south and the Purisima Hills and San Raphael Mountains to the north. Days are warm, nights are cool and the abundant sunshine is tempered by wind and fog. This is Central Coast Wine Country at its best.

From the winemaker – “Handcrafted from a blend of Central Coast vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley, Paso Robles and the Edna Valley, we tasted the different lots 175 times before we blended them together, a practice that lent itself to the naming of this wine. A well-balanced expression of the Central Coast region, the final blend is comprised of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Viognier. This full-bodied blend’s dark, jammy fruit flavors and rich, soft tannins are framed nicely by notes of sweet oak and end with a graceful, lingering finish.”

2011 Chateau Ste Michelle Cold Creek Chardonnay

Chateau-Ste-Michelle-Cold-Creek-ChardonnayThis 2011 Columbia Valley chardonnay has fruit forward flavors and plenty of natural acid. The growing season started a week late in blooming, but caught up as the perfect ripening weather lasted through September. The weather was not too hot, which allowed grapes to retain their natural acidity.

From the winemaker – “Cold Creek Chardonnay is typified by concentration and intensity from the 40-year-old vines and warmth of the site. This Chardonnay is a decadent style with ripe fruit and a toasty character. The cooler 2011 vintage in Washington provided enhanced acidity with an elegant finish.”

Great with seafood risotto, salmon, veal.

2011 Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon

Martin-Ray-Cabernet-SauvignonAll of our Sonoma County Cabernet was harvested early in the cold mornings, then destemmed and moved to small, open top stainless steel tanks. There it fermented at moderate temperatures and macerated on the skins for an extended period of time. The wine was pressed off, settled 2 days and then racked to barrels for malolactic fermentation. This Cabernet spent 14 months aging in oak barrels and in tank; 45% new oak was used, half of that being American and half French oak.

From the Wine Maker – Classic aromas of ripe cherry, pipe tobacco, cedar, spice and cola lure the taster to candied cherry flavors, finishing with soft leather and rich blackberry and plum.”

Pair our elegant, yet approachable Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon with a gourmet hamburger or rack of lamb.

2011 Folie à Deux Chardonnay

Folie-a-Deux-ChardonnayThe fruit for this Chardonnay is selected from the best vineyards in the Russian River Valley. Once harvested, the juice is fermented almost entirely in French oak barrels to add complexity and develop the rich fruit flavors. The wine is aged in these barrels for six months to preserve the wine’s vibrant fruit character.

From the winemaker – “The Folie à Deux 2012 Chardonnay is rich and seductive. Its complex aromas of warm shortbread, cinnamon, pear and melon overtones touch the nose, while flavors of fuji apple, tangerine, and pineapple citrus rest on the palate. Lingering hints of vanilla are present in the finish. This wine is full-bodied with depths of fruit from the partial malolactic fermentation, creating creamy texture and vibrant acidity.”

For a great food pairing, serve this wine with poached salmon or pan seared scallops.

2011 St. Francis “Old Vines” Zinfandel

Zinfandel is sometimes referred to as California’s own grape variety. Prized by Italian immigrants arriving in California in the early 1900’s, it was a popular choice for making their families traditional rich hardy style dry red wine.

From the Wine Maker – “The grapes for our 2011 Old Vines Zinfandel program must meet certain criteria to be included in this classic California wine. The vines must be at least 50 years old; many are as old as hundred years old. Because of their age, these plots yield less than two tons per acre of exceptionally concentrated fruit. Many of these vineyards have Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet planted among the Zinfandel adding texture and color to what is called a “field blend”. The 2011 Old Vines Zinfandel has deep aromas and flavors of ripe black cherries are laced with spice and toasted oak notes in this full-bodied wine of velvet tannins and a long finish.”

Try this great Zin with roast, steak, beef ribs, brisket, Beef Wellington or beef jerky. Hard cheese like Parmigiano or Romano.

2011 Noble Vines 1 Red Blend

Noble-Vines-1-Red-BlendVine Types: What is a Clone?
Throughout centuries of cultivation, winegrowers have paid close attention to their vines, watching for beneficial changes as the plants adapted to their site and growing conditions. They selected those with exceptional attributes and propagated them by cuttings from the original vine into the vine types we call “clones”: genetically identical vines that are prized for specific characteristics.

From the Wine Maker – “{Noble Vines} 1 Red Blend is a medium-bodied wine with a balanced acidity and supple tannins. On the nose, rich aromas of blackberry and black cherry mingle with hints of spice. these dark fruit flavors carry through beautifully to the palate ending with a touch of pepper. Merlot leads the way in this fruit-forward wine followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. The addition of Zinfandel adds a touch of softness to the final blend — softening the shoulders of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.”

This wine pairs nicely with roast pork, pork chops, pork tenderloin, ham or mild sausage. Mild, firm cheeses like Swiss or Gouda.  Hard cheeses like Parmigiano or Romano and savory cheese like Cheddar.

2011 Antinori Chianti Classico Peppoli

Antinori-Chianti-Classico-PeppoliIntroduced in 1988 with the 1985 vintage, Pèppoli Chianti Classico DOCG is the archetypal modern Chianti Classico. In a departure from traditional Chiantis, Pèppoli combines the complexity and structure of a well-aged riserva with the fruity fragrance of a young wine. This style is made possible by a unique microclimate where east-northeast facing vineyards are planted in a small heat-retaining valley on mineral-rich rocky soils that are perfect for growing very fruity, lively Sangiovese. The wine further benefits from the use of better Sangiovese clones, severe grape bunch selection, delayed and cluster harvest when necessary.

From the Wine Maker – “Ruby red in color, the 2011 Pèppoli shows notes of cherries well-integrated with the chocolate and vanilla aromas of the oak aging. The palate shows much Sangiovese varietal character. The tannins are soft and silky, and the flavors are long and well sustained.”

The wine is delicious paired with cold starters, pasta, cheeses. Also perfect as a wine by the glass.

2011 Ghost Pines Red Blend

Ghost-Pines-Red-BlendNamed after the Ghost Pines Vineyard purchased in 1964 by Napa’s historic Louis M. Martini Winery, Ghost Pines produces unique and contemporary wines from some of California’s premier appellations. Winemaker Michael Eddy enjoys the freedom to choose the best grapes he can find, regardless of AVA. Inspired by the free-form character of its namesake tree, Ghost Pines embodies the progressive spirit of California winemaking – “excellence has no boundaries.”

From the Wine Maker – “Our Ghost Pines 2011 Red Blend showcases the complexity and balance that the right combination of the right grapes can achieve. The Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in this blend act as the stoic Dr. Jekyll, while the Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Sangiovese are a classic Hyde: assertive, aggressive and maybe even a little disturbed. Aromas of blueberry and blackberry pie are framed nicely by salted caramel, spice and truffle notes. Rich and full-bodied, this blend offers chewy tannins and a long, luscious finish.”

This wine is best served with roast beef, steak, steak prepared with dark and hearty sauces or red wine sauces, beef stew, or short ribs. Hard cheeses like Parmigiano or romano and firm cheeses like cheddar.

2011 QUPÉ Maxtap Cuvée Red Blend

QUPE-Maxtap-Cuvee-Red-BlendThis is a 100% handcrafted wine that comes from a number of vineyards in both Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. Vineyard sites are primarily Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley, French Camp Vineyard in Paso Robles, our own Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard in the Edna Valley (Demeter Certi#ed Biodynamic) and the organic Ibarra-Young Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley (a vineyard that we have farmed ourselves since 1986).

From the Wine Maker – “Qupé is the local Native American Chumash word for California poppy and Maxtap is the Chumash word for “to weave” or in this case “to blend”. This wine is a blend of 64% Syrah, 18% Grenache, 15% Tempranillo and 3% Mourvedre. This is a wine that works well with foods that would normally be served with a rich red. With its soft tannins, plump fruit and spices this wine works well by itself as well. The aromas and flavors show nice berry fruit and dried cherry with hints of tobacco and wild herbs. This wine is not meant to take up cellar space but if you are so inclined should continue to age nicely for 5-8 years.
