2010 Robert Mondavi Private Selection Chardonnay

In 2010, our Central Coast Chardonnay grapes enjoyed an extended period maturing on the vine, which produced fruit with impressively concentrated flavors. The natural roundness of our Chardonnay was enhanced by partial barrel and malolactic fermentation coupled with extended aging on the yeast lees, resulting in a luscious, complex wine. The blend is made up of 98% Chardonnay, 1% Muscat Canelli, 1% Malvasia Bianca.

From the Wine Maker – “The nose reveals lemon blossom, pineapple, and peach aromas with smoky oak nuances along with enticing vanilla spice and toasty brown sugar flavors. The creamy, mouthfilling palate creates a lush impression and is balanced by a rich, lingering finish.”

Enjoy this delicious wine with rich seafood, poultry and pork dishes, white-sauce pastas – like fettuccine Alfredo, or flavorful, soft ripening cheeses.

2010 446 Chardonnay

Born in France, Raised in America. Not all vines are created equal. Over centuries, the French have carefully singled out the most coveted vines in Bordeaux and Burgundy, naming each vine with a unique number to identify its exceptional attributes. Here in California, we’ve planted a selection of these French vines exactly where they will flourish best. Single Vineyard 446 Chardonnay is named for Vine Type 4 grown in Block 46 of our San Bernabe Vineyard. San Bernabe’s cool growing season and diverse soil types add to 446 Chardonnay’s brilliant color, juicy tropical and citrus flavors and supple finish.

From the Wine Maker – “The 2010 vintage exhibits appealing aromas of golden delicious apples, apricots and pineapple. Medium bodied with a creamy mid palate this delightful wine offers flavors of peach, coconut, and hints of toasty vanilla spice.”

446 Chardonnay can be enjoyed on its own or with grilled shellfish, light pasta entrees or with curry dishes.

Although the percentages may vary slightly from vintage to vintage, the ever popular “Serenity” is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, and a kiss of Semillon.

From the Wine Maker – “The distinctive and intense fragrances of gooseberry, green apple, pineapple and juniper berry are followed on the palate by Honeydew melon and kiwi.”

A perfect balance of acidity to the touch of sweetness lend this wine to ideally match a spicy pan-Asian dish, exotic Indian cuisine, Tex-Mex fare, or to be simply enjoyed on a warm afternoon.

2009 Ruca Malen Yauquen Chardonnay

This Chardonnay is forward in style, with lightly toasty, creamy aromas that accent baseline apple and tropical fruit scents. This wine exposes a citrus corner that balances its tropical fruit. A hint of fresh herbs and minerals articulate a well-balanced delicious wine.

From the Wine Maker – “Yellow with bright green hues. In the nose it shows, floral notes, pears and pineapple. In the mouth it is fresh and sweet, with a very well-balanced acidity. Persistent and aromatic after taste.”

Best with grilled or sautéed pork chops, pork tenderloin, grilled or sautéed veal, veal marsala, scaloppini or roasted veal. 2006 Chalone Vineyard Chardonnay

Sleek and focused, with subtle pear, melon and honeysuckle notes that are medium-weight, ending with a burst of flavor and a touch of minerality.

From the Wine Maker – “The Monterey County Chardonnay shows cool climate freshness in the fruit, along with good viscous texture and body, which is typical of our longer growing season. The wine has the classic citrus-pineapple tropical fruit aromas of our region, combined with luscious pear flavors, crisp acidity and bright floral aromas. The oak is beautifully integrated with the fruit. Impressive up front, the wine shows a very long, elegant finish.”

Great with appetizers such as; baked goat cheese, smoked fish or shellfish, oysters on the half-shell and escargots that are sautéed with garlic.

2008 Taz Chardonnay

This is a moderately aromatic Chard with notes of toasty oak, butter, vanilla, a little pineapple and butterscotch. Dry, full-bodied, medium acidity, with flavors of ripe pear, and a slight touch of minerality and meyer lemon with some creaminess on the finish. The oak gives way on the nose after being open a few minutes and comes through more on the palate.

From the Wine Maker – “The TAZ Santa Barbara Chardonnay is 100 percent barrel fermented in French oak (19% new), and undergoes a partial malolactic fermentation. I like the wine to have nice viscosity and mid-palate weight, but my main goal is to preserve the natural acidity and tropical fruit that has put Santa Barbara County Chardonnay on the map. This wine opens with aromas of lemon chiffon, pineapple and toasted coconut. The wine is creamy, but balanced with a refreshing acidity and lengthy finish.”

This wine is excellent with pasta in light wine sauce like lemon-flavored olive oil or spicy Asian noodles. It also goes well with caesar or green salads with light to medium dressings.

2009 Creme de Lys Chardonnay

2009 Creme de Lys ChardonnayAndre’ — “I think the Creme de Lys is a first course of its own. No need to pre-heat the oven. Just Chill and Open. Then Pour, Sip, Repeat. This is a delicious wine with plenty of things going on. Nicely balanced but not over done. No need to complicate it with food.

If you want to force a food and wine pairing out of me, my go to dish with a wine like this is Grilled Salmon with Butter Sauce. Pre-heat the grill. In a small sauce pan combine 1 cup wine (this one or a similar full-bodied white) 4 shallots peeled and chopped, and the juice of 1/2 lemon. reduce over medium heat until almost no liquid remains. add 2 tablespoons heavy cream and reduce for 3-4 minutes. Stir in 1 stick of unsalted butter until completely melted and then strain into a warm container. You may need a pinch of salt and pepper. Grill the salmon 3-5 minutes per side depending on the thickness. serve with the butter sauce and some seasonal vegetables.

To be honest, as much as I enjoyed the Creme de Lys, this is not my favorite style of wine. I do however understand why many people like it. So, the day after I originally tasted it I felt the bottle staring at me. I decided to taste it again. And,  I really enjoyed it more the second day. I think that after the bottle was opened the flavors had a little time to integrate. The green apple wasn’t so, In Your Face. Or maybe I was just in a better mood. This inspired me to try a second Food and Wine Pairing. Hence a second recipe.

Pork Loin with Roasted Onion and Apples

I know, you might think a red would pair better here. But, give this a try.  The Creme de Lys is full-bodied enough to pull it off. The staff at Andre’s loved it. .

8 -4 ounce medallions of pork.(I prefer chops from the rib end ask the butcher, he’ll know what you mean)
olive oil
1 large onion thinly sliced
2 granny smith apples. peeled, seeded, and cut into 8ths
1/2 cup wine
1 cup chicken stock
salt and pepper

in a cast iron pan brown the pork over medium high heat on both sides. remove from the pan and set aside. In the same pan add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally for 10-15 min. until they are soft and golden . Add the wine, stock, apples,  pork and seasoning. Cook very gently over low heat for 10-12 minutes. The liquid should just barely move. Do not boil as it will make the meat tough.
A little mashed potato and some glazed carrots and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

I hope you’ll try one, or both of these recipes and send me some feed back”

From the winemaker:

“Our Crème de Lys Chardonnay entices you with aromas filled with lush tropical fruit, baked apple, toasty oak and crème brûlée notes. These aromas are echoed in the beautifully balanced flavors, with juicy pineapple, citrus and red apple expression adding liveliness to the textured palate.”
